Recurrent amplification of RTEL1 and ABCA13 and its synergistic effect associated with clinicopathological data of gastric adenocarcinoma

Abstract: BackgroundDespite progression in treatment of gastric cancer, prognosis of patients remains poor, in part due to the low rate of diagnosis during its early stages. This paradigm implies the necessity to identify molecular biomarkers for early gastric cancer diagnosis, as well as for disease monitoring, thus contributing to the development of new therapeutic approaches. In a previous study, performed by array-Comparative Genomic Hybridization, we described for the first time in literature recurrent amplificatio… Show more

“…Several studies have associated overexpression of ABCA13 with poor prognosis of cancer [48,49]. ABCA13 is also considered a useful marker for predicting lymph node metastasis in resected gastric cancer patients in early stage [50]. Disruption to ABC transporter activity results in lipid accumulation and elevated levels of inflammatory cytokines in lung tissue [51].…”

“…ABCA13 is an intriguing candidate as the expression levels are very high relative to other ABC family members, and there are no reports of endogenous or exogenous substrates, expression patterns in epithelium, or associations with respiratory mucosal immunology. Reports show associations between ABCA13 expression and cancers 3638 , while ABCA13 variants are associated with mental health abnormalities 39,40 , although no mechanisms have been defined for either of these observations. Other ABCA family members are involved in lipid transport and dysregulation of their pathways can result in lung inflammation 41 .…”

“…The high prevalence of H. pylori in GC tumors has been reported widely, both in Brazil and around the world[ 50 - 54 ]. The scenario in Pará is typical[ 15 , 47 , 55 ], with the prevalence of H. pylori in tumor samples being up to nine times higher than that recorded in healthy tissue samples[ 16 ]. In the present study, H. pylori was present in a high percentage of tumor samples, with 87% (263) of the patients being affected by the bacterium.…”
