Red List of Estonian lichens: revision in 2019

Abstract: The second assessment of the threat status of Estonian lichens based on IUCN system was performed in 2019. The main basis for choosing the species to be currently assessed was the list of legally protected lichens and the list of species assigned to the Red List Categories RE–DD in 2008. Species that had been assessed as Least Concern (LC) in 2008 were not evaluated. Altogether, threat status of 229 lichen species was assessed, among them 181 were assigned to the threatened categories (CR,… Show more

“…During the 4-days field excursions, ten new taxa for Estonia were recorded, among them seven lichenized species, one lichenized intraspecific taxon and two lichenicolous species. New localities were found for two threatened and three near-threatened species, according to the recent assessment of the threat status of Estonian lichens (Lõhmus et al, 2019 (Laundon, 1992;Baruffo et al, 2006;Kukwa & Czarnota, 2008). So far B. lesdainii has been reported from Europe (e.g., Austria, Belgium, France, Germany, Italy, Finland, the British Isles, Poland, Portugal, Spain, Sweden) and North America (e.g., Laundon, 1992;Kümmerling & Leuckert, 1993;Kukwa, 2000;Baruffo et al, 2006;Kukwa & Czarnota, 2008).…”

“…The aim of the Environmental Board procurement, announced in 2019, was to carry out regional assessment of the threat status of selected fungal species occurring in Estonia, except for lichenised fungi and polypores that have been recently evaluated. Species from the two last groups, assessed to belong to the threatened categories CR, EN, VU have been outlined by Lõhmus et al (2019) and Lõhmus et al (2018). Due the limited time the following…”

“…The threat status of Estonian lichens was evaluated in 1988 for the fi rst time; 40 species were included in the list of threatened lichens (Anonymous, 1993). Ten years later already 110 lichen species were included in Red Data Book (Randlane, 1998). In these two early Red Data Books of Estonia only macrolichens were evaluated using a conventional system of threat categories while the criteria for defi ning the categories were mainly intuitive-emotional (Lilleleht, 1998;Randlane et al, 2008).…”
