Redesign of the cross-section of bicycle lanes considering electric bicycles

Abstract: The design of a bicycle lane's cross-section has a significant influence on the riding behaviours of cyclists. Wider bicycle lanes can encourage users of electric bicycles (e-bikes) to ride within the lane by providing the necessary riding space, which will improve the safety and efficiency of overall multi-level heterogeneous traffic flow. An empirical cross-section design was obtained based on field observations of the riding characteristics of e-bike users at four road sections in Xi'an, China. Vehicle widt… Show more

“…When data needs to be processed in real-time, sensors must be powerful enough to process data within a limited time and be portable enough to minimize impact on participants [30]. The DFD can be either obtained based on the statistics of serval indicators [16,31] or from data processing algorithms. The data processing algorithms that have been used in related researches include artificial neural network [32], Bayesian network [33], spectrum analysis [34], wavelet transforms [35], Gaussian process mixture models [36], accident tree method [37], multivariate Tobit model [38], and support vector machine [39].…”

“…7 Li et al found that users of electric bicycles within heterogeneous traffic flow need more lateral space for safe riding. The cross-section of bicycle lanes should allow the completion of overtaking maneuvers, and the results suggest the cross-section needs to be wider than 3 m and no less than 2.6 m. 8 Petzoldt et al 9 concluded that the presence of any other road user, regardless of whether it was a pedestrian, another cyclist, or a motorized vehicle, led to a considerable risk increase.…”
