Reduced graft function (with or without dialysis) vs immediate graft function—a comparison of long-term renal allograft survival

Abstract: This study has shown that the CRR at day 7 correlates with renal function up to 5 years post-transplantation and with long-term graft survival. We have also demonstrated that amongst patients with reduced graft function after transplantation, two groups with significantly different outcomes exist.

“…According to the data of some authors, DGF has a negative impact (Johnston et al, 2006;Quiroga et al, 2006), while other studies have not found an effect (Boom et al, 2000;Sola et al, 2004). This difference is due to a number of factors.…”

“…Delayed graft function (DGF) is a frequent (10-50%) complication of the early post-transplantation period (Brier et al, 2003;Sánchez-Fructuoso et al, 2004;Azevedo et al, 2005;Johnston et al, 2006). Ischemia-reperfusion injury and the related graft tubulopathy cause incomplete or even missing function of transplanted kidney, i.e.…”

“…This group of patients can be defined as having intermediate graft function or slow graft function (18). The risk factors and the graft outcomes are likely similar to DGF, though less severe (18). This can possibly be explained by lesser severity kidney injury or lesser degree of baseline clinical or subclinical kidney dysfunction in the allograft (18).…”
