Relapsing-Remitting Multiple Sclerosis diagnosis from cerebrospinal fluids via Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy coupled with multivariate analysis

Abstract: Multiple sclerosis (MS) is a chronic, progressive, inflammatory and degenerative disease of central nervous system. Here, we aimed to develop a method for differential diagnosis of Relapsing-Remitting MS (RRMS) and clinically isolated syndrome (CIS) patients, as well as to identify CIS patients who will progress to RRMS, from cerebrospinal fluid (CSF) by infrared (IR) spectroscopy and multivariate analysis. Spectral analyses demonstrated significant differences in the molecular contents, especially in the lipi… Show more

“…ATR-FTIR spectroscopy has been proposed as an efficient useful diagnostic tool for a variety of diseases within the biomedical field toward translational medicine. 37,38 In order to visually demonstrate the spectral differences between studied groups, the average spectra of MPM, LC, and BPE pleural fluids are shown in Fig. 1, in the 3800 to 800 cm −1 spectral region.…”

“…Significant alterations are observed in the lipid-to-protein ratio for the NP-treated samples (Figure 3A and 7A), indicating an alteration in the cellular lipid and protein metabolism caused by NP exposure (Yonar et al, 2018). These biomolecular alterations, in turn, may be related to NP-induced apoptosis or dysfunction of SCs and germ cells that lead to seminiferous tubule degeneration with impaired spermatogenesis.…”

“…These alterations can be detected rapidly and sensitively without using external agents by attenuated total reflectance-fourier transform infrared (ATR-FTIR) spectroscopy [49,50]. Sen et al [51] aimed to investigate the effects of obesity on macromolecular alterations in order to characterize berlin fat mice (BFMI) lines according to the macromolecular alterations within SCAT and VAT by using ATR-FTIR spectroscopy.…”
