Relationship between adult stature and timing of the pubertal growth spurt

Abstract: Various literature report that little or no correlation exists between adult stature (AS) and the timing of the pubertal growth spurt in stature. No direct linear relationship between AS and age at peak height velocity (PHV) was evident in the Hiroshima Growth Study sample. However, the partial correlation between AS and age at PHV was negative when stature at PHV was controlled. That is, AS and age at PHV negatively correlate with each other so that the older the age at PHV, the lower the AS when stature at P… Show more

“…A review of the literature indicates that some biological parameters, such as age at peak height velocity (PHV) and length of adolescence, have a linear relationship with final stature (Qin et al 1996). Although Ali and Ohtsuki (2001) developed an adult stature prediction model that included PHV as the most important variable, the PHV-dependent model is limited because growth prediction is only possible several years after the age of PHV has passed.…”

“…There are many reports indicating no relationship between adult stature and the timing of the adolescent growth spurt (Bilewicz and McGregor, 1982;Zacharias and Rand, 1982;Prader, 1984;Tanner, 1989;Bielicki and Hauspie, 1994;Beunen et al, 1994;Qin et al, 1996). Genetic control of the tempo of maturation appears to be independent of genetic control of final stature.…”

“…The majority of approaches has been based on some form of parametric model. Several have been proposed (Israelsohn, 1960;Marubini, et al, 1972;Bialik, et al, 1973;Bock, et al, 1973;Manwani et al, 1973;Tanner, et al, 1976;Preece and Baines, 1978;Bock and Thissen, 1980;Berkey and Reed, 1987;Byard et al, 1991;Jolicoeur et al, 1992;Qin et al, 1996;Ledford and Cole, 1998). Parametric curve-fitting entails the estimation of a number of unknown constants, which specify the curve.…”
