“…The SUS sensor was prepared by sputter coating (CS200, ULVAC, Kanagawa, Japan) with the use of a SUS 304 target. Each DLC coating was performed by the direct current-pulsed plasma-enhanced chemical vapor deposition method (DC-pulsed PECVD; NPS-330, Nanotec, Chiba, Japan) 11) . The source gas for DLC and F-DLC coating was C2H2 and C6F6, respectively, and the base substrate under DLC and F-DLC layers is gold.…”

“…Previously, we reported that homogeneous DLC-coated orthodontic brackets significantly reduced static friction between brackets and wires under both dry and wet conditions 10) . Moreover, fluorine-doped DLC (F-DLC) and silicon-doped DLC (Si-DLC) coatings were deposited onto brackets and frictional properties between coated brackets and wires under dry and wet conditions were characterized 11) . DLC, F-DLC and Si-DLC coatings provided a significant reduction in static friction, and F-DLC-coated brackets exhibited the significantly lowest static friction between the bracket and wire under wet conditions, which was lower than that under dry conditions, among the three tested coatings.…”

“…Many attempts have been made to use coatings which show extremely low wear in technical applications, such as diamond-like carbon (DLC) [3]. DLC coatings have not only been applied to load bearing implants [4], but also in static applications such as orthodontic brackets [5] and stents [6]. However, transferring a coating from a technical to a medical application was not straightforward.…”

“…The static friction between PEEK wires and brackets was almost the same as that of Ni-Ti wire. For the friction test, EL was employed, in accordance with the previous report [ 26 , 27 ]. SEM revealed no damage of PEEK wires after friction, and the size and shape of PEEK did not influence the static friction.…”

“…Measurements of the static friction between the orthodontic wire and the bracket were performed according to previous reports in the system shown in Figure 12 [ 26 , 27 , 34 ]. Each bracket was bonded accurately to the center of a stainless steel plate with unfilled adhesive resin (Superbond Orthomite, Sun Medical, Shiga, Japan) by using the bracket-mounting device shown in Figure 12 b,c.…”
