Relationship of Growth to Aneurysm Rupture in Asymptomatic Aneurysms ≤ 7 mm: A Systematic Analysis of the Literature

Abstract: Small aneurysms are prone to growth and rupture. Aneurysm rupture is more likely to occur in aneurysms with larger absolute diameter growth, but rupture can also occur in the absence of growth. The annual growth rate in both groups suggests that rate of growth of aneurysms is highly variable and unpredictable, justifying treatment or close diagnostic follow-up.

“…Patients treated with open-cell stents were excluded. At the participating centers, all ruptured aneurysms are treated, and treatment of unruptured aneurysms is performed after careful assessment of perceived risk factors for rupture 18,19 and consultation with our multidisciplinary cerebrovascular team and patients.…”

“…33 A decision analysis based on data from this screening study showed 150 relatives need to be screened to prevent one episode of SAH. 34 Although screening marginally increased the absolute number of life years, it did not increase the number of quality adjusted life years. 34 Thus screening of persons with only one affected relative could not be recommended on the basis of this study.…”

“…34 Although screening marginally increased the absolute number of life years, it did not increase the number of quality adjusted life years. 34 Thus screening of persons with only one affected relative could not be recommended on the basis of this study. In a study screening 116 persons with ≥2 first degree relatives with SAH an aneurysm was revealed in 8% of the screenees.…”
