Relationships Between Strains of Mycoplasma mycoides subspp. mycoides and capri Studied by Two-dimensional Gel Electrophoresis of Cell Proteins

Abstract: Strains of Mycopiasma mycoides subsp. mycoides have been divided into small colony (SC) and large colony (LC) types (Cottew & Yeats, 1978). The protein patterns of representative strains of these two types and of M . mycoides subsp. Capri were compared by a high resolution, two-dimensional gel electrophoretic method. The results suggest that the LC strains are more closely related to M . mycoides subsp. Capri than to the SC strains of M. mycoides subsp. mycoides.

“…capripneumoniae represent the six recognized members of the M. mycoides cluster, and species identification within this cluster has been problematic. Electrophoretic, immunoblotting and DNA hybridization studies confirm the close phylogenetic relationship between members of the cluster (Bonnet et al, 1993;Christiansen & Ernø, 1990;Costas et al, 1987;Olsson et al, 1990;Rodwell, 1982;Rodwell & Rodwell, 1978) and serological cross-reactions between Mycoplasma sp. bovine group 7 and M. capricolum subsp.…”

“…It must also be considered that functionally equivalent proteins differing by only a single charged amino acid may appear as unique protein spots when analysed by 2-DE. In fact, bacterial strains can sometimes show a greater degree of variability by 2-DE than observed by DNA-DNA hybridisation [53]. Jackson et al showed that the differences in the 2-D protein profiles observed for these bacteria followed their generally recognised taxonomic classification [41].…”

“…capricolum [12] have been reported. Two-dimensional electrophoretic, immunoblotting, and DNA hybridisation studies also suggest a close relationship among species of the M. mycoides group [13][14][15][16][17][18]. Studies by Rodwell, [14] showed that the protein profiles of ten isolates of Mycoplasma sp.…”
