Relevance of single-nucleotide polymorphism to the expression of resistin gene affecting serum and gingival crevicular fluid resistin levels in chronic periodontitis and type 2 diabetes mellitus: A randomized control clinical trial

Abstract: Aim:The present study is aimed to investigate whether single-nucleotide polymorphism (SNP) of resistin gene (RETN) at −420 and +299 sites, is associated with resistin levels in serum and gingival crevicular fluid (GCF) in periodontally healthy, chronic periodontitis (CP) with and without type 2 diabetes mellitus (T2DM) patients.Materials and Methods:Serum and GCF samples were procured from all the 60 patients (twenty in each group) of the three study groups i.e., periodontally healthy (Group I), CP (Group II) … Show more

“…The +299 (G>A) SNP is located in the second intron of the RETN gene (Suriyaprom et al, 2009). Several explanations may explain the association of this SNP with T2DM Li et al, 2007;Rode et al, 2019;Suriyaprom et al, 2009). For example, this SNP may be in linkage disequilibrium with another SNP that modulates level of gene expression of resistin, similar to that reported between -358 and +420 RETN SNPs (Onuma et al, 2010).…”

“…Immune and epithelial cells both release resistin, a hormone peptide generated from adipose tissue. Resistin can act as a pro-inflammatory mediator and is a key marker for inflammatory disorders, according to recent research [ 47 ]. Human cartilage glycoprotein-39 (YKL-40) is a recently identified inflammatory factor with several tissue origins.…”

“…Since it is a follow-up study, the sample size was considered with reference to the previous study. [ 6 ] A dental and medical history was recorded for the selected patients, and an intraoral examination was conducted by a single examiner (RK). The intrarater reliability in the measurements of periodontal parameters was evaluated before treatment in the study groups.…”

“…[ 5 ] NSPT was performed to evaluate the reduction in inflammatory status with an interval of 3 months in our previous study. [ 6 ] Although significantly positive results were obtained when evaluated clinically to know whether eradication of causative microbes and complete remission of disease could be achieved after 3 months of NSPT, led us to generate a further protocol involving microbiological analysis.…”
