Reliability-Aware System Synthesis

Abstract: Increasing reliability is one of the most important design goals for current and future embedded systems. In this paper, we will put focus on the design phase in which reliability constitutes one of several competing design objectives. Existing approaches considered the simultaneous optimization of reliability with other objectives to be too extensive. Hence, they firstly design a system, secondly analyze the system for reliability and finally exchange critical parts or introduce redundancy in order to satisfy… Show more

“…It has been shown by Glass et al [18] and others that prior models only supply one form of resource for each activity, and it should be taken into mind that there are connections between numerous resources and activities. In addition, the research presented in [19] describes the recovery strategy as a combination of self-reconfiguration and self-routing.…”

“…Based on given component reliabilities, the goal is to optimize the Mean Time To Failure (MTTF) of the system (c.f. [9]). Our DSE approach is designed primarily for transient faults.…”

“…In [11], we show the benefit of considering both types of faults in a unified manner. One obvious way to achieve this is to integrate the existing analysis in [9] and consider lifetime reliability as one extra optimization goal. However, additional optimization objectives reduce the optimization efficiency considerably.…”

“…This is because reliability becomes a major design objective [23,16] and has a major effect on other objectives. It is therefore important that this objective is explored as a separate design objective [9] and not hierarchically.…”
