Remediation of hexavalent chromium contaminated water through zero-valent iron nanoparticles and effects on tomato plant growth performance

Abstract: Contaminated water with hexavalent chromium Cr(VI) is a serious environmental problem. This study aimed to evaluate the Cr(VI) removal by zero valent iron nanoparticles (nZVI) reduction process and the impact of Cr(VI), nZVI and combined treatment with nZVI and Cr(VI) on tomato growth performance. To evaluate the Cr(VI) toxic effect on germination capability, seeds were exposed to increasing Cr(VI) concentrations up to 1000 mg L −1. The inhibition of seed germination and the decrease of hypocotyl and root leng… Show more

“…Environmental contamination of Cr (VI) is gaining more consideration because it is widespread throughout the world with high levels in water and soil owing to natural and anthropogenic activities [11][12][13]. These include mining and metal works, steel and metal alloys production, paint manufacturing, wood and paper processing, dyeing, and raising the chromium content in wastewater [14][15][16].…”

“…The nano zerovalent iron (nZVI) particle is regarded as a potential reagent for the fast environmental restoration [ 80 ], and these particles have turned out to be a research hot-spot in the area of water remediation. These nanoparticles possess a characteristic core–shell framework with a shell of nonmetallic oxide in a few nanometers thickness enclosing a metal iron core.…”

“…In addition, there are reports about how priming seeds with nanomaterials leads to improved growth and yield in some crops 7 , 20 . Finally, a method for removing toxic chromium from irrigation water using iron nanoparticles 21 is included, showing a way for recovering contaminated water sources for farming.…”
