The current economic situation is pushing the oil industry toward higher efficiency and safety, demanding different ways of work. Optimization is an increasingly important issue, which involves technology, sharing of real-time information, collaboration, and the application of multiple expertise across disciplines, organizations, and geographical locations. In this way, companies are introducing Integrated Operations to redesign and optimize many work processes. To address this challenging scenario, Petrobras, the Brazilian oil operator, decided to optimize the collaborative environments of its drilling centers which are critical for well construction, to introduce integration and improve efficiency. This article presents a methodological approach that is applicable across the oil industry, including a survey of drilling centers to document perceptions concerning the key Integrated Operations components: people, process, technology and organization. This approach applied an intensive assessment. The applicability and scalability of this methodology are reinforced by inclusion of statistical analysis of questionnaire responses. The study results were used to implement a unique collaborative environment that has decreased operating time and facilitated future operational improvements. The research pointed to positive impacts on both, the safety and performance aspects. The preliminary results are promising. For an example, it was observed a 7.25% decrease in time required for a casing run.

There have been significant developments in the evolution of well data aggregation, storage and analytics over the past two decades. Initially, trends were captured on chart recorders and paper charts in the mud logging units, where decisions were based on the experience of the personnel at the rigsite. In general, rig operations were usually successfully completed with the technology available at the time. However, with economic downturns, increased competition, and variations in oil and gas prices, the upstream industry has become far more cost and efficiency sensitive, requiring increased focus on non-productive time (NPT), whether it is due to failures or inefficiencies in the daily operation -we refer to this as Performance Opportunity Time (POT).Through the definition of operational key performance indicators (KPI) and the introduction of intelligent software to calculate and benchmark these KPIs, POT or "flat time" on the drilling curve has been significantly reduced by critically analyzing certain work tasks at the rigsite, combined with remote services. The ability to compare the operational time breakdown for the same type of operation in near real-time across multiple rigs provides the operator with significant insight on the level of operational efficiency at each rig. In combination with remote advisory services, this provides a powerful solution to improve on operational performance This paper illustrates how operational KPI data have been analyzed and benchmarked to enable active focus on recorded POT and the subsequent positive results.

Remote Operations Centers and Re-engineering Work Processes: Retaining Competent Personnel in an Extremely Competitive Marketplace

During the last 5 to 6 years, the utilization of real-time operations centers has gradually expanded to comprise a wide range of remote services traditionally handled at the rigsite. Some oil and gas operators have reduced the footprint for new and mature fields, which has driven the need to re-engineer the traditional work processes carried out at the rigsite. Another driver is the reduced availability of competent personnel. Over time, several functions have changed and merged into one common operation. In addition, multiple functions have been relocated from the rigsite to centrally located operations centers where the "digital part" of the jobs is now performed. Field personnel have undertaken in-depth cross training to perform new, more hands-on functions, and senior personnel have undertaken key functions in the real-time operations centers. The new remote operations approach, transforming several traditional rigsite positions, requires changes in the individual's thought and skill set. Oil and service companies, therefore, are developing and adopting new remote operations strategies for the workforce to meet the ever-increasing demand for efficiency and automation. The underlying challenge is the availability of younger competent personnel in an industry that will soon experience a workforce demographic age gap, as the aging workforce retires over the next decade. The remote operations initiative enables retention of highly competent senior personnel in the operations centers, providing knowledge transfer, cross-discipline training and efficient and effective operational advice to the workforce in the field as well as to the client. The paper presents the evolution of remote operations over a decade with examples and effects, and discusses how remote operations centers, driven by new digital technologies and work processes, will influence the industry in the future.
