Renewable energy powered desalination in Baja California Sur, Mexico

Abstract: Baja California Sur (BCS) is an arid sparsely populated coastal state in northwest Mexico. Population growth, agriculture and booming tourism have lead to severe overexploitation of underground aquifers and saline intrusion. This paper reviews the current water and energy situation in BCS. The state enjoys very high levels of solar radiation, typically above 5 kWh/m2/day, and the suitability of renewable energy powered desalination for BCS is discussed, including past efforts in BCS and present challenges for … Show more

“…Be that as it may, local municipalities have attempted to help themselves through a process of recycling wastewater in the absence of perennial streams and reliable precipitation (Paez, Holl, Soto, Meeler, & Vercruse, 2010). Further, at least 63 plants in Baja, California Sur, use reverse osmosis technology for the desalination of salt water (Bermudez-Contreras, Thomson, & Infield, 2008). Within the state, the evidence above suggests that desalination is definitely a venture that meets with a warm reception amongst local policy-makers.…”

“…This has been evident for a long time and photovoltaic technology has been used in BCS to power remote applications like basic lighting, refrigeration, water pumping and desalination [7]. However, most of the electricity consumption in BCS takes place within CFE's electricity networks.…”

“…Fortunately, BCS has clean, renewable energy (RE) resources that can be used to generate electricity [7,8]. The use of RE to mitigate GHGE has been extensively studied around the world [9][10][11][12][13][14][15][16].…”
