Abstract: The long-term OS and DFS were not significantly different between repeated hepatic resection and RF ablation for patients with recurrent HCC after hepatic resection.

“…2). A 20 percent standardized difference between two groups indicates a small difference21, and a 10 percent standardized difference might correspond to the smallest potentially meaningful difference23. Our propensity score model was discriminated effectively and well calibrated between patients who underwent RFA and OT at baseline.…”

“…The propensity score presents the conditional probability of receiving an exposure given a vector of the measured covariates21. In our study, propensity scores for all the patients were estimated by multiple logistic-regression models using the following baseline characteristics as covariates: sex, age, nodule volume, ethnic group, SF-36 dimension scores (PF, RP, BP, GH, VT, SF, RE, MH), smoke, drink, chronic diseases, marital status, monthly income, education lever and current job22.…”

“…Some studies offered multiple treatment modalities but chose to report only a given treatment subgroup; four studies looked at RH alone. Centres offering ablation reported mostly RFA only; however, three studies used both RFA and ethanol ablation, combining these into a single ablation group. Additional ablation techniques, such as holminum and microwave coagulation, were reported in single studies.…”

“…However, Song KD et al [22] described that RFA and repeated hepatectomy attained similar survival benefits in the management of recurrent HCC after hepatectomy. They compared the long-term outcomes of repeated hepatic resection and RFA for recurrent HCC by using propensity score matching.…”

“…However, the repeated hepatectomy would be technically more difficult, because of intra-abdominal adhesions caused by previous hepatic resections as well as new growth of intrahepatic vascular structures after previous hepatic resection, and there is a potential risk of postoperative hepatic failure after repeated hepatic resection in patients with limited hepatic function reserve [22]. On the other hand, RFA can be repeatedly performed for local recurrence after both RFA and new HCC appeared in the remaining liver.…”
