Representing Mereotopological Relations in OWL Ontologies with OntoPartS

Abstract: Abstract. Representing and reasoning over mereotopological relations (parthood and location) in an ontology is a well-known challenge, because there are many relations to choose from and OWL has limited expressiveness in this regard. To address these issues, we structure mereotopological relations based on the KGEMT mereotopological theory. A correctly chosen relation counterbalances some weaknesses in OWL's representation and reasoning services. To achieve effortless selection of the appropriate relation, we … Show more

“…In this way, we think we can supply a work context that makes it possible to develop an understanding of requests formulated in natural language. Semantic search is currently the object of very particular analyses [41] in particular, in search related to the semantic web and inferences based on ontologies [42]. In order to fully understand the queries based on life and motion configuration patterns recognition, the defined predicates will be applied to an example of a conference organization in the next chapter.…”

“…De cette façon, nous pensons fournir un cadre de travail pour permettre d'évoluer vers la compréhension de requêtes formulées dans le langage naturel. La recherche de sémantique fait actuellement l'objet d'analyses toutes particulières (Keet et al 2012) notamment dans la recherche relative au web sémantique et des inférences sur base d'ontologies (Stewart et al 2013). …”

Generic, reusable ontology elements and domain-independent relations have the potential to both help ontology developers in answering these questions and also speeding up the ontology development and improving the quality of the ontology [3,4]. Nevertheless, reusing entities and selecting relations from existing ontologies is a complex task (e.g., [4,6]).…”
