Reproductive patterns among mothers of males diagnosed with Duchenne or Becker muscular dystrophy

Abstract: Diagnosis of a child with Duchenne or Becker muscular dystrophy (DBMD) may impact future maternal reproductive choice; however, little is known about the reproductive patterns of mothers with a male child diagnosed with DBMD. Using population-based surveillance data collected by the muscular dystrophy surveillance, tracking, and research network, the proportion of mothers who conceived and delivered a live birth following the diagnosis of DBMD in an affected male child and factors associated with such reproduc… Show more

“…Our research supports a body of literature that suggests that personal experience of a genetic condition is potentially as relevant as an individual’s carrier status (Eggers et al 1999 ; Raspberry and Skinner 2011 ; Nabukera et al 2013 ). Carrier status may be just one of many factors influencing reproductive decision-making.…”

“…33 It also may reflect a change in parental reproductive choice; however, a separate analysis observed that reproductive patterns of MD STAR net mothers after knowledge of family history of DBMD tended to be similar to those without such family history. 36 The similar estimates for all cases and non-Hispanic white cases reflect the sizable proportion of non-Hispanic white individuals in the MD STAR net ; future efforts will include expanding surveillance among minority populations. It also may reflect racial/ethnic differences in time to diagnosis and access to care, random fluctuations, or true differences in prevalence of DBMD across these racial/ethnic groups.…”
