Research and application of jet stream arc-quenching lightning protection gap (JSALPG) for transmission lines

Abstract: Traditional lightning protection measures of transmission lines have been restricted by a variety of uncontrollable factors, and it has been difficult to achieve the ideal effect. In this paper, a novel Jet Stream Arc-quenching Lightning Protection Gap (JSALPG), based on the "channeling type" lightning protection method, was studied. JSALPG may be triggered to generate high-speed jet streams while its parallel gap is broken down by lightning strokes; the resulting jet stream will intensely act on the initial d… Show more

“…To solve the problem caused by follow-up power frequency arc, some scholars and companies began to carry out studies of arcextinguishing equipment. In addition to the most commonly used line arresters, there are some other devices including a kind of arcing horn device that can generate substantial dielectric gas to extinguish the short circuit arc [4,5], the metal oxide varistor, which is able to suppress arc development [6], a type of arcquenching lightning protection gap, which is designed to blow high-speed jet stream to quench power frequency arc [7][8][9], electrical installation using magnetic force to elongate and truncate arc [10]. However, these devices have problems such as the lack of surge absorption capability, limited gas capsules, and the complex structure, which may cause equipment failure.…”

“…Auxiliary devices for arc extinction are also recommended to improve the protection performance. In [15][16][17], a gas jet was used to elongate the arc and promote the arc cooling process.…”

“…Lightning is a significant cause of temporary and permanent power outages, due to the abnormal stresses it puts on the distribution lines. Studies from China, Japan, and Malaysia indicate that lightning is a major cause of power outages [1,2], with 40-70% of the total number of outages caused by lightning [3]. In Thailand, statistics from the Metropolitan Electricity Authority (MEA) [4] report 5000 outages per year with an unknown cause that may be the result of lightning hitting the system.…”
