Resistance to the chemotherapeutic agents of Staphylococcus aureus strains isolated from hospitalized patients

Abstract: Commensal/ooportunistic bacteria pathogens have been implicated severally in bacteremia and knee-joint infection. Methods & Materials: Fresh samples of feces (n = 65) were obtained from a group of invading cattle egrets (≈ 1000) on trees in Vom, Nigeria. These egrets were not deterred by efforts at tree-trimming. Samples were enriched in tryptone-soy broth and plated on MacConkey agar using standard procedures. All positive cultures were sub-cultured on cefixime-rhamnose-sorbitol Mac-Conkey agar (selective medi… Show more

“…S. aureus is also a leading cause of hospital-associated (HA) and community-associated (CA) bacterial infections in humans, associating with numerous mild skin and soft tissue infections, as well as life-threatening pneumonia, bacteraemia, osteomyelitis, endocarditis, sepsis and toxic shock syndrome (David & Daum, 2010). The increasing prevalence of meticillinresistant S. aureus (MRSA) and its ability to resist multiple drugs has posed a serious challenge for infection control (Junie et al, 2014). HA-MRSA often infects individuals with health care risk factors, such as surgery or residence in a long-term care facility.…”

“…Proper surveillance of the medical staff and a rational policy in prescribing antibiotics in these hospitals are therefore mandatory. Controlled trials must determine the potential medical and economic benefit of control strategies using this technology in hospital care units [27].…”

“…The increasing prevalence of methicillin-resistant S. aureus (MRSA) and its ability to resist multiple drugs has posed a serious challenge to infection control. 1,2 Escherichia coli is one of the earliest colonizers of the gastrointestinal tract; although eventually, it is a minor component of the colonic gut microbiome in humans, where it represents less than 0.1% of the total bacterial cells. Nevertheless, due to the overall high cell density in the colon, this small percentage translates into around 108 cells/ml.…”
