Resonant modes and magnetoelectric performance of PZT/Ni cylindrical layered composites

Abstract: Resonant modes and magnetoelectric performance of layered PZT/Ni and Ni/PZT/Ni cylindrical composites are considered. The first and the second resonant frequencies in the 1-150 kHz range correspond to the axial and the radial modes. Experimental results and theoretical analysis indicate that one should choose the trilayered structure and the first resonant frequency as the working frequency. This study is helpful in design and applications of magnetoelectric devices.

“…magnetoelectric effect [14,15], and the theoretical prediction has been carried out on such heterostructures [14,16]. Similar multiferroic heterostructures with cylindrical and semiring configurations have also been reported [17][18][19]. For the disk-ring heterostructures in our previous work, the piezoelectric PZT phase is poled along thickness direction [14,15], which is perpendicular to the vibration plane since the thickness is much less than the outer and inner diameters of the ring.…”

“…1. PZT ring with the inner diameter (D inner ) of 10 mm, outer diameter (Douter) of 12,14,16,18 or 20 mm and thickness of 1 mm is prepared by the standard solid state reaction method. The PZT ring is pasted with silver electrodes on the inner and outer side faces and poled radially under an electric field of 30 kV/cm in silicon oil at 120 • C. Then Terfenol-D disk with the diameter of a little smaller than 10 mm and thickness of 0.95 mm is inserted into PZT ring, and the small air gap between Terfenol-D disk and PZT ring is filled with silver epoxy.…”

“…In previous studies, plate and cylindrical layered ME composites made by electro-deposition were considered [14][15][16][17][18][19][20]. Cylindrical layered ME composites exhibit large gain ME effect at resonance frequency under high magnetic field induced by the volume magnetostriction [16][17][18][19][20], which provides significant potential for applications in high magnetic field detection. Recently, it is proposed that the cylindrical ME composites exhibit more superior performance than the plate composites [16].…”

“…Several ways have been proposed, such as using functionally graded materials [15][16][17], choosing curved structures-annular bilayer structures [18] or cylindrical layered composites [19][20][21][22], introducing nanocomposites [23][24][25][26], taking advantage of material nonlinearity [27,28], among others.…”
