Respiratory and cardiac self‐gated free‐breathing cardiac CINE imaging with multiecho 3D hybrid radial SSFP acquisition

Abstract: A respiratory and cardiac self-gated free-breathing 3D cine SSFP imaging method using multi-echo hybrid radial sampling is presented. Cartesian mapping of the k-space center along the slice encoding direction provides intensity-weighted position information, from which both respiratory and cardiac motions are derived. With radial sampling in plane every TR, no extra scan time is required for sampling the k-space center. Temporal filtering based on density compensation is used for radial reconstruction to achie… Show more

“…This is because: (I) there is an inherent delay between the electrical signal and the actual myocardial motion in which the electrical signal always comes first; (II) current self-gating trigger detection algorithm is based on finding the signal peak and thus tends to trigger on end-systole instead of end-diastole as the ECG R-wave based algorithm. A similar shift is also reported in other self-gating methods (23,24).…”

“…In more recent techniques, motion data for both respiratory gating and cardiac triggering can be extracted by filtering a self-gating projection because cardiac and respiratory motion have different temporal frequency ranges and information content (Figure 6). These methods have been used for 2-dimensional 67 and 3D cine imaging 68 and 4-dimensional whole-heart coronary MRA. 59 An alternative approach is to resolve cardiac and respiratory motion using a CS technique, such as XD-GRASP, as described earlier.…”

“…Examples of self-gated 3D non-Cartesian trajectories include 3D spiral phyllotaxis [17], [18], 3D Projection Reconstruction (PR) [19] and 3D stack of stars golden radial trajectory [20], [21]. For better signal contrast between blood and myocardium, especially required for coronary imaging, preparation pulses and fat saturation pulses are interspersed in the data acquisition [17], [18], [19].…”
