Rethinking the Role of Intermediaries as an Architect of Collective Exploration and Creation of Knowledge in Open Innovation

Abstract: This paper questions the applicability of traditional notions of intermediary activities, which are usually categorized as either brokering or networking, in cases of high uncertainty regarding technologies, markets or which actors to involve. In the case of collaborative open innovation, especially in circumstances when no single organization is able to take on the challenge alone, the activities traditionally associated with intermediation do not suffice to describe what an intermediary can do to support inn… Show more

“…Natalicchio, Petruzzelli and Garavelli (2014) stated that the use of intermediaries is consistent with the increasing tendency to decompose the whole innovation process into distinct phases. Agogué, Yström and Le Masson (2013) say that beyond brokering and networking, intermediaries may also take an active role in joint exploration and creation of knowledge.…”

“…Intermediaries are important in highly unpredictable environments, as they may reduce uncertainty and asymmetry between industry actors [21], [23]. Thus an intermediary can assist in the successful implementation of open innovation by a firm in the ecosystem through minimising the level of risk that can be incurred during the process of obtaining, integrating, and commercialising external innovations between the firm and the collaborators in the ecosystem [24].…”

“…If the collaboration is in place, the intermediary can provide other functions with the goal of diffusing knowledge among partners of the network (Agogué et al, 2013). The following are brokering functions (Howells, 2006):…”
