“…A tracer dose of microaggregated albumin does not present an appreciable phagocytic load to the RE system and its rate of clearance serves as an index of hepatic blood flow (1)(2)(3)(4)21). The fact that clearance of the tracer dose was normal in the patients studied is consistent with other clinical and laboratory data which indicated that they were not in a state of hepatic decompensation.…”

“…Just before a study each subject received 0.5 cm3 Lugol's solution diluted in orange juice to block uptake of free radioiodine by the thyroid gland. Two doses of albumin were employed: a trace dose of 0.025 mg/kg body weight, the rate of clearance of which reflects hepatic blood flow (3,4,21), and a larger test dose of 5.0 mg/kg, the rate of clearance of which has been used as a measure of RE phagocytic capacity (3,4,21). After the intravenous administration of '25I-labeled microaggregated albumin, multiple samples of venous blood were drawn from a vein in the contralateral arm into heparinized syringes.…”

“…Reticulo-endothelial system phagocytosis, as measured by clearance of 1251-labelled aggregated human serum albumin, is increased in Hodgkin's lymphoma, advanced disease being associated with more rapid, and remission with slower, clearance rates (Sheagren, Block and Wolff, 1967).…”
