Retinopathy of Prematurity

Abstract: We screened 50 neonates fulfilling the inclusion criteria admitted during the study period in a teaching hospital in a north-eastern state of India. Out of 50 neonates screened, 22 (44%) developed retinopathy of prematurity. There was significant association between the birth weight and gestational age of the baby at the time of the delivery with the development of ROP. Multivariate analysis of risk factors for development of ROP using a stepwise method, after controlling for various potential confounders, sho… Show more

“…ROP is considered a disorder of retinal blood vessel development in preterm infants of low birth weight [ 64 ]. It was estimated that a global number of 184.700 children and 14,9 million preterm neonates developed ROP in the year 2010, and the incidence of ROP was 68% among neonates weighting <1.251 g [ 65 , 66 ].…”

“…ROP, which was originally named retrolental fibroplasia, is a proliferative retinal blood vessel disease that can lead to visual impairment of varying severity [ 13 , 14 ]. It is characterized by abnormal growth of blood vessels in the retina of premature newborns, especially those undergoing oxygen therapy [ 15 ], and with BW <1500 g, in which case the incidence rate is approximately 60% [ 7 ]. It is a multifactorial disease that is very common in premature newborns, with various perinatal factors and interventions having been associated with an increased risk of developing ROP, including MV, oxygen therapy, red blood cell (RBC) transfusions, RDS, BPD, anemia, IVH, necrotizing enterocolitis, sepsis, and multiple pregnancies [ 7 , 16 ].…”

“…Retinopathy of prematurity (ROP) is a disease of retinal vascular and capillary proliferation affecting preterm infants undergoing oxygen therapy. 1 ROP is one the major problem of neonates having premature gestational age which could lead to visual impairment and complete blindness. It is the major cause of major cause of childhood blindness.…”

“…4 ROP results from oxygen requirement which in turn results in pathologic growth of vessels in the developing retina that may lead to permanent damage to the retina as well as retinal detachment and macular folds. 1 Severity of ROP is associated with duration of oxygen therapy. 5,6 Early diagnosis and early management can help in preventing this major cause of blindness.…”
