Throughout the 20th century, new religious movements (NRMs) emerged within established religions. Within Catholicism, these NRMs are known as new ecclesial movements and communities. A significant number of founders of these Catholic NRMs have been reported and found guilty of various types of abuses, including sexual abuse, abuse of power, abuse of conscience, and spiritual abuses. This article examines the repercussions of these scandalous behaviors on the foundations and institutions established by the accused founders. Firstly, we investigate how contemporary Catholic communities employ interpretations provided by traditional congregations regarding their founders in the postcouncil era. They utilize these interpretations to legitimize the charismatic founders of their respective movements. Secondly, we assess the feasibility of disentangling the accomplishments of these communities from the shadow cast by their controversial originators. Our findings advocate for the contextualization of works authored by individuals under scrutiny. This approach is presented as a more constructive and effective alternative to wholesale dismissal.

The writing analyzes trends in the life and ministry of women in Latin America. It provides a quantitative sketch identifying religious sisters' trends from 1970 to 2017 and compares them both with other regions and with Latin American priests. It exams three patterns, all of them concluding with declining numbers at the beginning of the 2000s.The analysis is grounded on a database that was built using the Statistical Yearbook of the Church. The article also examines the social space women religious have occupied in the Latin American countries over time; the construction of their social and ecclesial identity, and their relationship with Catholic consecrated men. Finally, it addresses their current challenges deepening in three issues that account for their crisis: first, the persistent clerical culture that permeates the Church´s dynamics; second, the disputes stirred up around decisions on their works, expressions of the past but not of their present; and, third, the building of their present identity through the complex process of finding inspiration in the confrontation of their foundational sources with present pastoral theological approaches, as those framed within feminist theologies. Unearthing clues to better understanding the Latin American sisters' crisis is a thread that runs throughout the analysis. Analiza la evolución numérica las religiosas entre 1970-2017 y las compara tanto con otras regiones como con los sacerdotes. Se identifican tres patrones, todos ellos concluyen con cifras decrecientes a principios del presente milenio. El análisis se basa en una base de datos construida a partir del Anuario Estadístico de la Iglesia. Se analiza asimismo el espacio social que han ocupado las religiosas en los países latinoamericanos a lo largo del tiempo; y la construcción de su identidad social y eclesial. Finalmente, se abordan tres aspectos que ayudan a comprender su actual crisis: primero, la persistente cultura clerical que permea la dinámica de la Iglesia; segundo, las disputas suscitadas en torno a las decisiones sobre sus obras, expresiones del pasado pero no de su presente; y, tercero, la construcción de su identidad actual a través del complejo proceso de encontrar inspiración en la confrontación de sus fuentes fundacionales con los enfoques teológicos pastorales actuales, como los enmarcados en las teologías feministas. El eje que atraviesa el escrito es encontrar claves analíticas que permitan comprender la crisis que están atravesando actualmente las religiosas.

Les recherches développées dans l’hémisphère Nord sur les abus de pouvoir, de conscience et sexuels dans l’Église concluent que le cléricalisme, en tant que perversion de l’exercice de l’autorité, est le principal responsable de la crise actuelle, conclusion reprise et fréquemment commentée par le pape François. Pour les auteurs, le phénomène ne correspond pas à des faiblesses individuelles mais à une organisation institutionnelle le favorisant. Certaines composantes du cléricalisme sont universelles, conséquences des structures uniformes de l’Église, en revanche, d’autres caractéristiques correspondent à l’organisation sociale et culturelle locale.Á partir d›une étude en Argentine et au Pérou, résultat d›un projet de recherche financé par le Intercambio Cultural Alemán Latinoamericano, Icala, et d’antérieurs projets, cet article se propose de combler un manque en analysant le cléricalisme et son impact dans la crise des abus, en contexte latino-américain. Les composantes universelles du phénomène se renforcent et acquièrent de nouvelles caractéristiques en Amérique Latine. Les multiples facettes du cléricalisme se rejoignent toutes autour d’un noyau commun, l’exercice sans contrepoids du pouvoir. Plusieurs facteurs, tels que le prestige de l’Église, la faiblesse des institutions gouvernementales, l’usage discrétionnaire de ressources, le machisme, les tendances culturelles à l’autoritarisme et l’européisation des formations en séminaires, transforment les prêtres en êtres d’exception et exacerbent leur pouvoir de type monarchique sur des laïcs passifs sans capacité, ni volonté de fiscalisation (Schickendantz). Par ailleurs, l’aura de sacré que tend à conférer le sacrement de l’ordre, en général, acquiert de nouvelles dimensions en contexte de modernité enchantée latino-américaine. Par leurs bénédictions, les prêtres sacralisent et purifient tous les objets du quotidien, les transformant en source de bien-être. Les changements actuels dans les pratiques de dévotions populaires renforcent ces tendances, faisant des prêtres des fournisseurs de bénédictions à volonté.Pour rompre les multiples renforcements qui justifient ce style de gouvernance, il faudrait développer dans l’Église une culture de la vulnérabilité (Keenan): envisager le prêtre non seulement comme un clerc au service des laïcs mais aussi comme un homme qui a besoin des laïcs pour être vraiment prêtre.
