Risk factors for asthma among children in Maputo (Mozambique)

Abstract: Childhood asthma was strongly associated with a family history of asthma and rhinitis, the place of residence, having smokers as parents and early weaning from maternal breast milk. These results highlight the need to reassess the management of asthmatic children in Maputo.

“…This is in conformity with many previous studies that have demonstrated an association between maternal asthma and development of childhood asthma and further emphasizes the important role of genetic susceptibility in development of asthma [5,20]. The precise mechanism for this is not clearly understood, but several workers have postulated that multiple genes are involved in pathogenesis of asthma such as; production of allergen-specific Immunoglobulin E(IgE), expression of broncho hyper-responsiveness, generation of inflammatory mediators such as cytokines and chemokines, and modulation of Th2 response to antigens [25-27].…”

“…In Africa, the majority of studies on childhood asthma were carried out among children aged 7-14 years [1-4]. Although evidence suggests that asthma starts in infancy, few researchers have studied risk factors for asthma in young children [5]. Hitherto, factors associated with asthma among children less than five years have not been established in Uganda.…”

“…However, another study by the same group, carried out in Maputo and involving 100 asthmatic children and 99 nonasthmatic children aged between 18 months and 8 years (mean age of around 3 years for both groups), showed that having been born or living in inner Maputo were independent and significant risk factors for bronchial asthma 59. Curiously, another South African study suggested that urban–rural differences in the prevalence of atopy may be partly due to differences in dietary components in the 2 areas 60…”
