Risks to the Health of Russian Population from Floods and Droughts in 2010–2020: A Scoping Review

Abstract: Climate change and natural disasters caused by hydrological, meteorological, and climatic causes have a significant and increasing direct and indirect impact on human health, leading to increased mortality and morbidity. Russia is a country that suffers from frequent climatic and weather disasters. This is mainly due to its vast territory, complex geographical and ecological environment, and widely varying climatic conditions. This review provides information on climatological and hydrological extremes in Russ… Show more

“…However, these effects were significantly different. In confirmation of the above, [28,37] revealed that natural disasters significantly impact the public health and well-being of the affected population and that negative impacts can be direct or indirect. The high cost of natural disasters is attributed to destroying expensive and essential infrastructure such as roads and buildings.…”

“…Historical trends show droughts occurring regularly at intervals of 2 -3 years in the Deyr (October-December) season and 8 -10 years in consecutive Deyr and Gu (AprilJune) seasons, extending seasonal hardships [10]. Records indicate that ten significant droughts occurred between 1918 and 1975, while droughts also occurred in 1979-80, 1983-86 and 1989-90 [11].…”

“…Furthermore, about 60% of the crops produced in this area are transferred to support global food security and Sustainable Development Goal 2 (SDG2 Zero Hunger) [10,11]. Given climate change effects in previous years, the spatio-temporal distribution of precipitation has led to significant changes in coping with the extreme development [12][13][14]; the aggravating floods and droughts caused by the condition have resulted in huge resource management and allocation losses in this area, especially crop production losses in the agricultural regions [15,16]. Due to the devastating hazards faced by this area, the capabilities to represent different classes of precipitation intensities and agricultural drought should be considered for the evaluation and selection of applicable PPs.…”
