Role of predation by harp seals Pagophilus groenlandicus in the collapse and non-recovery of northern Gulf of St. Lawrence cod Gadus morhua

Abstract: female length-at-maturity and cod condition. Natural mortality other than seal predation also 6 depends on cod condition used as an integrative index of changes in environmental conditions. 7The linkage between seals and cod is modeled through a multi-age functional response that was 8 derived from the reconstruction of the seal diet using morphometric relationships and stomach 9 contents of more than 200 seals collected between 1998 and 2001. The model was fitted

“…Increases in natural mortality rate due to seals have been hypothesized to prevent recovery of some Atlantic cod stocks (Chassot et al 2009), while high fishing pressure has been implicated in other stocks (Cardinale and Svedang 2004). The latter can occur even when the catch amounts are low (Shelton et al 2006).…”

“…Debate has been waged in the literature concerning the cause of the collapse of cod stocks and the role of fishing (e.g. Myers 1994, 1995;Myers et al 1996;Bundy 2001), seals (Bundy 2001;Fu et al 2001;Trzcinski et al 2007, Chassot et al 2009), and the environment (deYoung and Rose 1993). The evidence tends to suggest that seals were not the primary cause of groundfish declines, but have been identified as a potential impediment to cod recovery (Bundy 2001(Bundy , 2005aFu et al 2001;Swain and Chouinard 2008;Chassot et al 2009).…”

“…Trzcinski et al 2006, Chassot et al 2009 or the ecosystems in which they reside (e.g. Bundy & Fanning 2005, Savenkoff et al 2007) have been parameterised using the species and size composition of fish observed in the available seal diet samples.…”

“…, Savenkoff et al 2007). One such interaction, predation by pinnipeds, has received considerable attention (Mohn & Bowen 1996, Fu et al 2001, Chouinard et al 2005, Trzcinski et al 2006, Chassot et al 2009). The reason for this is likely twofold.…”
