Root growth of soybean cultivars under different water availability conditions

Abstract: Vigorous growth of soybean root system is a desired trait in breeding programs. However, few studies have evaluated this feature under field conditions. The aim of this research was to evaluate root growth of eight soybean cultivars under different water availability conditions. The experiment was carried out in Londrina, Paraná state, Brazil, during two growing seasons -with and without water deficit during the vegetative period. Soybean roots were sampled at flowering and assessed for dry matter yield, area … Show more

“…Currently, several Brazilian soybean producing regions suffer from drought, mainly in sandy soils and under high air temperatures, where the risk of yield losses due to water and nutrient deficits is higher (FRANCHINI et al, 2017). This situation could become worse with climate change.…”

“…A balanced soil is a guarantee of greater agricultural yield, especially the physical characteristics that are affected by anthropogenic management. Anthropogenic activity contributes to soil degradation, favoring on compaction process and reducing the water available to crops (FRANCHINI et al, 2017;MORAES et al, 2018a;MORAES et al, 2018b).…”
