Safety and Efficacy of Alginate Adhesion Barrier Gel in Compromised Intestinal Anastomosis

Abstract: Ultrapure alginate gel does not interfere with repair of ileal anastomoses constructed under conditions in which chances of anastomotic dehiscence are high. The alginate gel performs better than the HA/CMC film.

“…Chaturvedi et al . [ 44 ] placed alginate gel or sodium hyaluronate-carboxymethylcellulose (HA/CMC) film on the anastomosis of rats after ileal anastomosis, respectively, to assess the effect on early healing of ileal high-risk anastomoses and found that the adhesion score was reduced by nearly 40% in the alginate gel group compared to the HA/CMC film group. Sodium alginate has mucosal adhesion properties in the solid state and becomes a viscous and slippery gel-like solution in the dissolved state.…”

“…Conversely, Chaturvedi et al [20] demonstrated a surgical procedure by administering analgesics, such as buprenorphine in 0.02 mg/kg concentration, subcutaneously 30 minutes before surgery. After that, rats were anesthetized by inhalation of a isoflurane (3%) and 1: 1 surgical oxygen pressurized air mix.…”

“…Ileal continuity was restored by an inverted single layer end-to-end anastomosis with eight sutures done with 8-0 monofilament material. Azevedo Coutinho et al [21] also performed small intestine anastomosis in male dogs, that underwent anesthesia with sodium pentobarbital in a 30 mg/kg concentration. First, the procedure started with a jejunum cross section, 30 cm from the duodenojejunal flexure, followed by an end-toend anastomosis using the total single-level suture technique, the anterior half of the anastomosis was sutured on the serous surface and the posterior half was tied over the mucous layer in the lumen of the organ.…”
