Sample Size Estimation: How Many Individuals Should Be Studied?

Abstract: The number of individuals to include in a research study, the sample size of the study, is an important consideration in the design of many clinical studies. This article reviews the basic factors that determine an appropriate sample size and provides methods for its calculation in some simple, yet common, cases. Sample size is closely tied to statistical power, which is the ability of a study to enable detection of a statistically significant difference when there truly is one. A trade-off exists between a fe… Show more

“…23 Treatment allocation was determined by a statistician using block randomization with randomly varying block sizes of 2, 4, and 6 to ensure that both treatment arms had similar sample sizes. 24 Triple-dose nonflavored albendazole (400 mg) and placebo treatments (tablets matched in color, size, taste, and shape) were prepared by staff not involved in the field work, in sealed envelopes marked with unique identifiers.…”

“…All subjects gave written informed consent for the MRI examination and the subsequent scientific evaluation of the data sets. The sample size was estimated according to Eng. Assuming an SD of 10 % and a minimum expected difference of 5 %, the sample size was calculated to be 7.85 [16].…”

“…O tamanho da amostra foi determinado a partir de um estudo piloto previamente realizado, utilizando indivíduos que possuíam as mesmas características daquelas que foram empregadas no presente estudo, baseando-se em uma significância de 5% e um poder do teste de 80% 23 . A amostra foi composta por 14 homens saudáveis (idade: 25±4 anos, estatura: 175±4 cm, massa: 80±11 kg, distância biacrômial: 37±2 cm).…”
