Scenario for Data Exchange at the Microstructure Scale

Abstract: Microstructures represent the key to interoperability between continuum models operating at the process scale and discrete models and tools describing atoms/electrons. They also provide the link between experimental materials characterisation and the virtual world. The present paper introduces a microstructure state as the central information providing the link across different length scales and along the temporal evolution of a component. Different ways of generating and representing the microstructure state … Show more

“…Importantly, some of the needed methods for handling complex spatio-temporal materials and manufacturing data are being developed under such tools as DREAM.3D [34]. However, agreed upon standards for conveying materials information, such as for microstructure, defects and material properties, are still evolving [38][39][40][41][42]. In order to minimize the barrier to internal data collection, analysis, storage and publishing, e-Collaboration platforms are being recognized as essential components of an organization's infrastructure [43][44][45].…”

“…The AixViPMaP® implementation depicted in the present article is based on a pragmatic approach drawing on HDF5type datasets as the major means for the communication amongst different microstructure models and simulation tools [11]. It also includes experimental microstructure data [12]. The nomenclature for the entries in the objects in the HDF5 file essentially follows a metadata scheme for the description of microstructures [13].…”

“…How does one become aware of suitable tools? ICMEg, the Integrated Computational Materials Engineering expert group [1], a coordination activity of the European Commission, aims at developing a global open standard for information exchange between the heterogeneous varieties of numerous simulation tools. Once established, such an open and easily accessible formulation of a global standard will • significantly facilitate the exchange of data between different tools; • create new options and functionalities of the present tools;…”

“…The ICMEg consortium [1] coordinates respective developments by a strategy of networking stake-holders in the first international workshop, compiling identified and relevant software tools into the Handbook of Software Solutions for ICME, discussing strategies for interoperability between different software tools during a second (planned) international workshop, and eventually proposing a scheme for standardized information exchange in a future book or document. The present article summarizes these respective actions to provide the ICME community with some additional insights and resources from which to help move this field forward.…”
