Schistosomiasis in Renal Transplantation

Abstract: Summary— Six cases of infection with Schistosoma haematobium complicating renal transplantation in patients from endemic areas have been found. In no case was the diagnosis made before operation; in 3 cases it was established by biopsy at the time of operation and in 3 cases it was established later. Three patients developed complications which appeared to be related to their schistosomiasis. In patients from endemic areas about to undergo renal transplantation, we suggest that pre‐operative and intra‐operativ… Show more

“…The potential impact of urinary bilharziasis has been addressed by several studies [29–33] with controversial conclusions. In the present series the rate of complications among patients with evidence of bilharziasis was 10%, while that among patients with no evidence was 7.4%; this difference was not statistically significant in the univariate analysis.…”

“…The few cases reported by these three groups and their different approach to the treatment of the schistosomal infection could explain the differences in their results. Hefty and McCorkell [8] and Guleria et al [22] treated the infection before transplantation, while Weeden et al [23] did so after transplantation.…”

“…None of these patients had postoperative complications attributed to the schistosomal disease. Nevertheless, Weeden et al [23] reported that three of their six schistosomal kidney transplant recipients developed obstruction or leakage at the ureteroneocystostomy. The few cases reported by these three groups and their different approach to the treatment of the schistosomal infection could explain the differences in their results.…”

“…There are few reports on the effect of urinary schistosomiasis on the incidence of urological complications after renal transplantation. Weeden et al (1982) reported 6 patients who were infested with Schistosoma haematobium and who underwent live donor kidney transplantation. Three developed complications which appeared to be related to their schistosomal infestation.…”
