Schwarz, Wallace, and Rissanen: Intertwining Themes in Theories of Model Selection

Abstract: Investigators interested in model order estimation have tended to divide themselves into widely separated camps; this survey of the contributions of Schwarz, Wallace, Rissanen, and their coworkers attempts to build bridges between the various viewpoints, illuminating connections which may have previously gone unnoticed and clarifying misconceptions which seem to have propagated in the applied literature. Our tour begins with Schwarz's approximation of Bayesian integrals via Laplace's method. We then introduce … Show more

“…Both P3 and ACC deficits during executive control belong to the most common findings in schizophrenia (e.g., Carter , 2001;Bramon et al, 2004;Kerns et al, 2005). The fact that both target conditions were associated with cingulate deficits in schizophrenic patients supports two arguments.…”

“…However, with only 80 samples given, doing so would be an exercise in over-fit; moreover, some classifiers may work better by pure chance, even if CV scores were used (Lanterman, 2001). The goal of the present study was to investigate which features are critical for establishing the difference among groups.…”

“…The rationale of MML criterion is: the shorter the encoding message length for data is, the better the corresponding data generation model is. For detailed accounts on MML criterion (see Figueiredo and Jain 2002;Lanterman 2001;Nascimento et al 2010;Hanlon and Forbes 2002).…”
