Screw‐Dislocation‐Driven Bidirectional Spiral Growth of Bi2Se3 Nanoplates

Abstract: Bi2Se3 attracts intensive attention as a typical thermoelectric material and a promising topological insulator material. However, previously reported Bi2Se3 nanostructures are limited to nanoribbons and smooth nanoplates. Herein, we report the synthesis of spiral Bi2Se3 nanoplates and their screw-dislocation-driven (SDD) bidirectional growth process. Typical products showed a bipyramid-like shape with two sets of centrosymmetric helical fringes on the top and bottom faces. Other evidence for the unique structu… Show more

“…Therefore, several Bi-based nanomaterials, such as Bi 2 S 3 nanodots, 32 Bi 2 S 3 nanorods 33 and Bi 2 Se 3 NPs with different morphologies, [34][35][36][37][38] have been proposed as X-ray CT contrast agents and radio-/photothermal therapy sensitizing agents. Compared with orthorhombic Bi 2 S 3 , the topological insulator Bi 2 Se 3 has a two-dimensional layered rhombohedral structure with a unique surface electronic state 39,40 and has aroused increasing interest in biomedical applications due to its multifunctionality and good biocompatibility. 41 Notably, Bi 2 Se 3 nanostructures can release vital selenium for reducing the occurrence and fatality of liver, prostate, and lung cancers compared with nanoscale Bi 2 S 3 .…”

“…Atomically thin two-dimensional (2D) materials, including graphene [13], BN [4], Be 2 Se 3 [5], MoS 2 [6], GaSe [7], SnSe [8], and SnSe 2 [9], have attracted great attention due to their unique properties distinguished from the bulks in the past decades. However, the single function of the material has become the bottleneck for their further application.…”

“…28−37 The nanomaterials reported in the literature exhibit screw-dislocation-driven growth hillocks only on specific surfaces, such as the top surfaces of nanoplates. 34,35 In striking contrast, the hierarchical superstructures reported herein are exclusively enclosed by growth hillocks. Each of the peripheral surfaces is one screw-dislocation-driven growth hillock.…”
