“…Holothurians (Echinodermata: Holothuroidea), known as "sea cucumbers" or "beche-de-mer", are popular luxury food in Asia, called "trepang", and represent an economic important market as high value seafood products (Battaglene et al, 1999;Chen, 2004;Purcell et al, 2012a;Purcell et al, 2013). They are also used in traditional medicine for their nutritional virtues (Chen, 2004;Vergara & Rodriguez, 2016) and in medicine, pharmacology and in cosmetics for their bioactive compounds with anti tumoral, anti-oxidant and anti-inflammatory properties actually explored and valued (Janakiram et al, 2015;Kiew & Don, 2012;Kumar et al, 2007;Mena-Bueno et al, 2015;Santos et al, 2015).…”

“…Holothurians have been attracting increasing interest for their high content of secondary metabolites with manifold potential applications, especially in the pharmaceutical field [2]. The biological potential of sea cucumbers ranges from antitumor to antimicrobial, anti-inflammatory and antiviral activities [3,4,5,6,7,8]. Moreover, it has been reported that sea cucumbers extracts may act as anticoagulant agents and inhibitors of hyperlipidemia [9,10].…”

“…As reviewed recently, sea cucumber compounds can target the NF-κB signalling pathway, which is involved in inflammation, immunity, cellular differentiation, cell adhesion, and survival ( Wargasetia 2022 ). The extracts of Holothuria forskali and Parastichopus tremulus are reported to inhibit inflammation in endothelial cells ( Mena-Bueno et al, 2016 ). In a triple-blinded randomized controlled trial, the Stichopus horrens extract toothpaste can alleviate plaque-induced gingivitis, suggesting the anti-inflammatory effect of the sea cucumber compounds in human ( Bakar et al, 2020 ).…”
