Searches for other vacua. Part I. Bubbles in our universe

Abstract: We discuss models in which vacua other than our own can be directly observed in the present universe. Models with density-dependent vacuum structure can give rise to 'nonlethal'-vacua: vacua with lower energy-density than our vacuum, but only in regions with finite Standard Model densities. These models provide an explicit example of a bubble which is confined to a finite region of space and produces potentially detectable signatures, unlike standard Coleman tunneling events where bubbles expand at the speed o… Show more

“…In some sense, this is a third example, following [89] and [90], where we can search for signatures related to the presence of other vacua in the landscape, albeit indirectly. In a recent example some of the authors worked on [90], a deterministic Higgstory is achieved for large Hubble rates because the electroweak minimum disappears and only the high energy minimum of the Higgs persists during inflation.…”

“…We would like to note that our analysis of the physics of a light field such as the QCD-axion in systems at finite chemical potential is of general applicability, therefore of relevance for other light (below the QCD confinement scale) axion-like particles coupled to QCD degrees of freedom, e.g. [17,[36][37][38][39]. 2 We find this type of new physics well motivated and very interesting, specially in light of the excellent experimental prospects for improving our understanding of dense astrophysical objects such as NSs, as exemplified by the recent detection of gravitational waves from merger events [41].…”

“…Lastly, the instanton potential is minimized with respect to β at cos β = Sign [cos(3α)] . (5.38) Therefore, one finds that the axion is aligned with the η , such that 39) while the axion mass, neglecting mixing with η and normalized to its vacuum value, is given by…”

“…A very small value of V rebounce ∼ V 0 could arise assuming that the contraction/rebounce/expansion phase triggers movement of some lighter fields φ with potentials such that vacua close by in field space have similar energies. 'Ordered' landscapes of this kind have been considered, for instance, in [31][32][33][34][35][36][37]. 2 An example of this hiccupping structure is provided by Abbott's model [31], i.e.…”
