Second-generation colon capsule endoscopy is feasible in the out-of-clinic setting

Abstract: As an out-of-clinic procedure, CCE is feasible and easily performed. A home-based procedure may be associated with better acceptability and potentially with increased adherence to Colorectal cancer screening.

“…First‐generation CCE (CCE‐1) has some technical differences from the small‐bowel capsule, being approximately 6 mm longer with dual cameras that can acquire images from both ends, optics with more than twice the coverage area of the small‐bowel capsule, automatic light control, and a rate of 4 frames/s. CCE has been mainly used for colorectal cancer screening . Table shows the diagnostic accuracy of CCE for significant findings (polyps ≥6 mm or ≥3 polyps).…”

“…CCE has been mainly used for colorectal cancer screening. [84][85][86][87][88][89][90] Table 2 shows the diagnostic accuracy of CCE for significant findings (polyps ≥6 mm or ≥3 polyps). Van Gossum et al 84 reported that CCE-1 has a moderate sensitivity (64%) and specificity (84%) compared with colonoscopy for surveillance of colorectal neoplasia.…”

“…The sensitivity of CCE-1 for the detection of polyps was low with 7 (26%) cases out of 27 histologically diagnosed with CRC, being negative [15]. In contrast Conversely with CCE-2 no case of missed CRC was reported as shown in Table 2 [8][9][10][11][12][20][21][22]. In one study [20], two patients with CRC diagnosed by CCE-2 were referred for surgery without undergoing OC.…”
