Sedentary behavior and physical activity predicting depressive symptoms in adolescents beyond attributes of health-related physical fitness

Abstract: BackgroundSedentary behavior (SB), physical activity (PA), and attributes of physical fitness have been shown to be related to depressive symptoms in adolescents. The purpose of the present study was to investigate whether SB and fitness-producing activity predicted depression in active adolescents over and above gender and fitness attributes.MethodsParticipants were 249 adolescents (age: 12.85 ± 0.89 years, mean ± SD) from 3 public middle schools who wore Actical accelerometers to assess their SB and PA. “…Teacher training programs in using teaching strategies can be useful to encourage student motivation as expected, and provide insights into the mechanisms of responsibility for positively influencing classes (Bechter et al, 2019). Sedentary behavior and physical activity are both important predictors of depression in adolescents (Farren, Zhang, Gu, & Thomas, 2018). There is a reciprocal relationship between motor competence, body fat, VO2peak during childhood through early adolescence (6-13 years).…”

“…This finding also supports the notion that individuals who are physically active may engage in various types/levels of activities during the day, and participating in one level (e.g., LPA) does not compensate their participation in other levels. School health educators may provide various opportunities (i.e., recess, active classroom break, before and after school walking programs) for adolescents to cumulate recommended daily physical activity [15]. Building academic confidence and self-efficacy in adolescence is important.…”

“…[15][16][17] These findings show how participation in PA favors other health-related behaviors, as it seems to be a behavior that stimulates a healthy lifestyle, bringing benefits to individuals' health during adolescence with equally relevant adjustments into adulthood. 18 On the other hand, the positive effects of PA on these behaviors are not consistent in the literature, as other studies suggest that more active adolescents are more susceptible to alcohol consumption 19,20 and smoking cigarettes. 19 As can be observed, several studies sought to identify the associations of PA with other behaviors in isolation.…”
