Seeing diabetes: visual detection of glucose based on the intrinsic peroxidase-like activity of MoS2 nanosheets

Abstract: Molybdenum disulfide (MoS2) has attracted increasing research interest recently due to its unique physical, optical and electrical properties, correlated with its 2D ultrathin atomic-layered structure. Until now, however, great efforts have focused on its applications such as lithium ion batteries, transistors, and hydrogen evolution reactions. Herein, for the first time, MoS2 nanosheets are discovered to possess an intrinsic peroxidase-like activity and can catalytically oxidize 3,3',5,5'-tetramethylbenzidine… Show more

“…The intrinsic peroxidase‐like activity of metal sulfide‐based nanomaterials including ZnS nanoparticles (ZnS NPs), MoS 2 nanoparticles, nanoflakes, and nanosheets (MoS 2 NPs, MoS 2 NFs, and MoS 2 NSs), nanostructured FeS, CuS nanoparticles (CuS NPs), VS 2 nanosheets (VS 2 NSs), and WS 2 nanosheets (WS 2 NSs), are widely explored and applied to various applications. Molybdenum disulfide (MoS 2 ), as one of the typical 2D layered transition metal dichalcogenides (2D‐TMDs), has been widely used in many applications including biosensor, catalysis, and electronic devices due to its electronic properties and unique structure.…”

“…Very recently, nanoscaled peroxidase mimics have received great attention since the first Fe 3 O 4 nanoparticles-based peroxidase mimetic was reported [25]. A variety of nanomaterials, such as carbon nanomaterials [26][27][28][29], BSA-stabilized Au clusters [30], Au NPs [31], CuO nanoparticles [32], Co 3 O 4 nanoparticles [33], MoS 2 nanosheets [34], carbon nitride nanosheets [35], WS 2 nanosheets [36], TiO 2 nanotube arrays [37], have been demonstrated to possess peroxidase-like activity.…”

“…120,121 To address this issue, strongly luminescent monolayered MoS 2 122 and MoS 2 QDs 123, 124 were rationally designed. 125,126 Based on this finding, they developed a simple, selective and sensitive colorimetric method for the visual detection of blood glucose. 125 Ha et al 124 successfully synthesized the homogenous MoS 2 QDs through a Li intercalation method, which had a distinct blue photoluminescence at 415 nm regardless of the excitation wavelength.…”
