Seeking new acne treatment from natural products, devices and synthetic drug discovery

Abstract: Despite lots of research on the pathogenesis of acne, the development of new therapeutic agents is still stagnant. Conventional agents which target multiple pathological processes have some serious side effects and this makes seeking new treatment options important for treating acne. As new therapeutic options, researchers are focusing on natural products, synthetic drugs and devices. From natural products, epigallocatechin-3 gallate, lupeol, cannabidiol and Lactobacillus fermented Chamaecyperis obtusa were re… Show more

“…Antibiotics have been developed to treat the disease-causing E. coli in a bactericidal or bacteriostatic manner; however, bacterial resistance to conventional antibiotics is increasing, and the development of treatments with new mechanism is emerging as an important challenge [34]. Lupeol, triterpene compound with pharmacological activity, is a fat-soluble and not harmful to humans; indeed, it has long been used as an effective acne treatment [35,36]. It is also recognized as an antifungal, antiviral, and antibacterial agent.…”

“…The adequate control of the four pathogenic mechanisms involved in the appearance of acne lesions is key to treatment success [1][2][3][4][5][6][7]. Several exacerbating factors have been suggested including diet, menstruation, sweating, personal stress, ultraviolet radiation, application of pomades and occupation [8].…”

“…Staphylococcus epidermidis bacteria (Achermann et al, 2014;Otto, 2009). Acne can be treated using ingredients from nature, the use of natural ingredients as active substances is believed to provide smaller side effects, so it is safe if used long term (Yang et al, 2017). Natural materials that can be used are in the treatment of acne, one of which is soursop or Annona muricata L. leaves.…”
