With the increased demand for food, the use of methods and alternatives that increase efficiency in selection of inbred lines is necessary. e use of quantitative genetics plays an important role in this respect, especially when the pedigree method is used in autogamous plants. is study proposes the inclusion of relationship information among progenies using the best linear unbiased predictor (BLUP) to obtain the breeding values of greater accuracy and, consequently, increase genetic gains from the selection. A strategy is proposed that aims to accelerate the program of obtaining perennial plant inbreds and use the greatest amount of information possible in selection so as to attain maximum accuracy. In that way, it would be possible to make inbreds available which are better than the existing ones, with greater frequency, meeting the agribusiness demand involved in production of perennial plants.

Selection environment affects plant behavior and response to selection. The objective of the present study was the evaluation of 17 quality and quantity phenotypic characteristics of six open-pollinated maize lines of fifth cycle of selection (C4), which was performed by the implementation of honeycomb breeding, in two contrasting environments (A and B) The soil chemical analysis revealed that the two environments were very diverse (A: SL, pH = 6.25, organic matter: 1.29%, B: SCL, pH = 8, organic matter: 2.4%). Our data suggest that moisture content, seed oil content, ear length, ear diameter, number of grain rows, spindle diameter and seed thickness exhibit inter-location high broad-sense heritability (over 0.9). Heritability estimations were highly depended on the environment, since GEI interaction was high indicating environmental interaction with genotype, especially environment B, which seems to favor heritability. Location affects strongly variation and genotype by environment interaction is significant in many cases. Seed width was the only characteristic to be depended on genetic variability. Descriptive statistics revealed a broad range of mean fluctuations, indicating satisfactory variability in many characteristics to be exploited by breeders. Some characteristics showed low CV (Coefficient of Variation) values (1.6 to 5.3), indicating stability of performance and low environmental effects. Significant correlations between the 17 quantity and quality traits found in our study may be a useful tool for indirect selection of certain characteristics, otherwise difficult to be selected due to non-additive effects. Cluster analysis and PCA showed contrasting results in classification of open-pollinated lines and this was attributed to strong environmental effects that distorted phenotypic expression of the characteristics studied.

Most of Indonesian red rice is not grown in dry land. New varieties could be breeded through mutation breeding. This research objective was to evaluate the selection strategy of drought tolerant on red rice. The study was conducted on Ultisol soil in Bangka Belitung Province, Indonesia, in February 2012-February 2015. It consisted of three activities, selection M5, evaluation of selected M5 and evaluation of drought critical period on selected M6. Mutant of M5 was selected and evaluated with polyethylene glycol (PEG) -0.5 MPa and less of soil moisture. Selected M6 was evaluated to observe a critical period of drought stress. Evaluation with PEG produces five superior mutants that more vigor than the elders. Selection on low humidity shows that M5-GR150-1-9 produces higher filled grain and weight filled grain than other mutants and elders. The selected red rice line M5-GR150-1-9-13, has a better tolerance towards drought than its control. It could be obtained such mutant lines which have a high yield, early maturing and drought tolerant from the result of six generations gamma irradiation mutant selection.
