Selection of Coffea canephora parents from the botanical varieties Conilon and Robusta for the production of intervarietal hybrids

Abstract: The objective of this research was to quantify the genetic divergence of potential Coffea canephora parents, with the goal of developing progenies that associate the best traits of the Conilon and Robusta botanical varieties for hybrid vigor expression. Thus, 10 morphological and productive characteristics of 130 clones of Conilon and Robusta botanical varieties and their intervarietal hybrids were evaluated over 2 years. The experiment was conducted in a randomized block design with four replicates of four pl… Show more

“…The high vigor of the hybrids formed through the breeding of genetically divergent parents Moraes et al is a characteristic of this species (OLIVEIRA et al, 2018;MONTAGNON et al, 2008;ROCHA et al, 2014). In 2004 were conducted hybridizations between matrices of the botanical varieties Conilon and Robusta, aiming to obtain plants that associate the best traits of their parent botanical varieties within the hybrid vigor (TEIXEIRA et al, 2017).…”

“…The existence of genetic variability and selective potential among the conilon coffee genotypes was also demonstrated in other studies of genetic divergence through multivariate techniques using the mixed model method employed in populations of conilon (Silva et al 2017, Oliveira et al 2018. Ferrão et al (2017) recommend that "Conilon" clonal coffee cultivars be made up of a combination of at least eight different genotypes, although new clonal varieties have been developed by grouping nine to 14 genotypes.…”

“…Seventeen previously selected genotypes (Oliveira et al, 2018b;Spinelli et al, 2018) were evaluated by the following morphological and productive traits: plant height, number of productive plagiotropic branches, distance between rosettes of the plagiotropic branch, number of coffee beans per rosette, number of rosettes per plagiotropic branch, length of plagiotropic branch, length and width of leaves, number of days for fruit ripening and coffee bean size. The genotypic value of production was estimated based on production of hulled coffee using the BLUP (Best Linear Unbiased Prediction) method (Table 1).…”
