This paper explores a case of self-retranslation involving two prominent figures of the literary and translation fields in Latin America and the United States: Puerto Rican writer Rosario Ferré and US American translator Gregory Rabassa. Originally published in Spanish in 1972, "La muñeca menor" is one of Ferré's best-known and popular stories. Rabassa's initial translation of the story, published in 1980 as "The Youngest Doll," was soon overshadowed by the second version of the text, which was penned by the author herself in collaboration with feminist scholar Diana Vélez (1986). The study of "La muñeca menor" and its companion English versions revisits the first piece Ferré ever self-(re)translated while it assesses the impact of self-retranslation in shaping her identity as a writer. While discussing various aspects of the texts, the analysis focuses on these questions: (1) To what extent does Ferré's retranslation make for a new version of the story or is, rather, a revision of Rabassa's work? That is, does the retranslated version evidence a competing interpretation of the source text? Do these versions display different discursive and literary mechanisms? (2) What is the socio-cultural, literary and institutional re-inscription of the text in the versions under study? What factors have led to this second English version of the story? (3) How do these versions relate to specific cultural, literary and translation fields?

Este artículo explora la construcción de la subjetividad en el discurso literario autotraducido. Según sostendremos, la noción de retrabajo del ethos previo, definida por Amossy (2001, 2010, 2014) como el conjunto de elementos y procedimientos sociodiscursivos que le permiten al locutor restaurar, modificar o transformar en un nuevo intercambio la imagen que el interlocutor pueda tener respecto del orador, resulta productiva para reflexionar acerca de la naturaleza distintiva de la práctica discursiva conocida como autotraducción (Grutman y Von Bolderen, 2014; Ferrara y Grutman, 2016). Nuestra propuesta teórico-metodológica será puesta a prueba a través del análisis de dos ensayos de la escritora puertorriqueña Rosario Ferré (1990, 1991a). Este trabajo persigue dos objetivos: articular una propuesta que, a partir de la noción de retrabajo del ethos explique la singularidad de la subjetividad en el discurso autotraducido y, en el plano del análisis, aportar al estudio de la autotraducción en el campo de las literaturas latinas de Estados Unidos.

The article hereby is an inquiry into a case of translation republishing, where extensive changes in the latter version are present despite the fact that the agents of the process are the same. The case is a fruitful source of discussion for translation studies since it provides constancy of significant variables while the translation products are considerably different. Through a descriptive study of such a case, varying constraints under which the agents operate are attempted to be revealed. Such revelation is also significant insofar as it provides a new perspective on the motives behind retranslation, which has been an amply discussed issue. In addition, the observed change in the constraints leading to non-conformism and a related change of macro-strategy observed in the retranslation seem to provide significant insight into the role of cultural, communicative and contextual factors in translator behaviour, which has important implications for translator training. The analyzed case also provides ground for the reconsideration of some of the common central concepts in translation studies today, as it seems to be buoyed up in the blurry boundaries between these concepts. Such conceptual discussion is increasingly becoming essential for translation studies as the body of research in translation studies calls for more and more precise terminology with each passing day.
