Semi-automatic Evaluation of the Degree of Bitumen Coverage on Bitumen-Coated Aggregates

Abstract: EN 12697-11 is the standard providing test methods for evaluating affinity between aggregate and bitumen and its influence on the susceptibility of the mixture to stripping. Among the methods, the rolling bottle test has a number of advantages in terms of rapidity, low costs, and suitability for routine testing. However, since affinity is assessed by visual registration of two independent operators, results may be altered by a large amount being inevitably subjective. The authors suggest a semi-automatic proce… Show more

“…To overcome their subjective and so unconscious conclusions, some researchers have developed semi-automatic techniques. Källén et al [14] and Lamperti et al [15] employed methods based on gray level thresholding (GLT), assessing YUV or RGB color space. Although these techniques seems to be promising, their usage is limited due to bitumen glossy surfaces.…”

“…The asphaltenes are largely responsible for the behavior of bitumen as a viscous body with plasticity and elasticity. The resins confer flexibility and are important for interfacial adhesion and ductility of the flooring [2]. The malthenes represent the fluid bituminous components, which are essentially composed of carbon (80-87%), hydrogen (9-11%), oxygen (2-8%), nitrogen, sulfur compounds and trace metals (0-1%) [3].…”
