Separation of hydroxybenzoic acid isomers using the molecular imprinting technique

Abstract: Molecular imprinting polymers (MIPs) for salicylic acid (SA), 3-hydroxybenzoic acid (3HBA), and 4-hydroxybenzoic acid (4HBA) were synthesized using styrene and 4-vinylpyridine (4-VPy) as functional monomer and divinylbenzene (DVB) as crosslinker. The adsorption characteristics of hydroxybenzoic acid (HBA) isomers on each MIP were investigated. The materials used for the polymerization of each 3HBA and 4HBA-MIPs were adsorbed relatively well. This verifies that the MIPs that can adsorb template selectively were… Show more

“…MIP materials with high selectivity for the isolation of hydroxybenzoic acids (especially for low‐abundance components) were studied mainly by high performance liquid chromatography, capillary electrochromatography, or spectrophotometry . The polymers are generally prepared by means of bulk polymerization.…”

“…In addition, when the separation of SA was performed using hydrophobic polymers (or functional monomers) [32], it was not easy to separate SA. Therefore, in our previous work [33], MIPs were synthesized using materials such as THN, 1-naphthol (NA), and 1-naphthoic acid (NAA), which have structures similar to the SA with intramolecular hydrogen bonding. In an adsorption experiment, SA was separated using the prepared MIPs.…”
