Separation of inorganic anions on a high capacity porous polymeric monolithic column and application to direct determination of anions in seawater

Abstract: A commercially available 4.6 mm id x 50 mm polymethacrylate-based monolithic strong anion exchange column (ProSwift SAX-1S) designed for the separation of proteins has been successfully used to separate small inorganic anions in the presence of a seawater sample matrix. Using a hydroxide eluent with suppressed conductivity detection the ion exchange capacity of this column declined over time; however, using KCl as the eluent, the column performance was stable with a capacity of 530 microequiv. for nitrate. The… Show more

“…Improvements in IC selectivity have mainly been achieved by developing new stationary phases and analytical methods [2][3][4]. Most of the stationary phases employed in IC system have functional groups with charged or chargeable moieties, where the ionic analytes undergo an electrostatic interaction [5,6].…”

“…IC is applied to analysis of industrial streams [1], quality control of potable water [2][3][4][5], analysis of food and beverages [6][7][8][9], medicine [10], determination of components in aerosols [11] and analysis of epoxy-curing agents [12]. New developments of IC imply that it is suitable to construction of devices such as on-chip manifolds of micron-scale dimensions, which exhibit a sustainable functionality with minimum expenditures of consumables [13,14].…”

“…In general, there are two types of monolithic columns which have been developed for chromatography: silica-based monolithic column [22][23][24] and organic polymer-based monolithic column [25,26]. Silica-based monolithic columns are produced by using the sol-gel approach to make a continuous sol-gel network throughout the column.…”
