Septicaemia caused by Myroides spp.: a case report

Abstract: Introduction: Myroides spp. are aerobic, yellow-pigmented, non-fermentative Gram-negative rods considered to be low-grade opportunistic pathogens. However, their intrinsic resistance to commonly used antibiotics necessitates prompt identification and evaluation. Case presentation: Here, we report a case of septicaemia caused by Myroides sp. A 36-year-old pregnant female was admitted to the intensive care… Show more

“…Later, in 1929 Stutzer and Kwaschnina, renamed it as Flavobacterium odoratus (Elantamilan et al, 2015). In 1996on the basis of extensive polyphasic taxonomic analysis it was determined that the organism formerly classified as Flavobacterium odoratum consisted of a heterogeneous group comprising of Myroides odoratus and Myroides odoratimimus (Vancanneyt et al, 1996).…”

“…Genus Myroides are not part of normal human microflora, rather they are encountered in the wet environments, sea water, soil and sewage treatment plants (Manish Rajan et al, 2017). Over the last few years this organism has been reported to be associated with various life threatening infections including recurrent cellulitis, post-operative wound infections and severe septicaemia (Elantamilan et al, 2015). They are mostly low grade opportunistic pathogens, infecting immunocompromised hosts such as those suffering from liver cirrhosis, end stage renal disease and chronic obstructive pulmonary disease on long term corticosteroid therapy (Beharrysingh, 2017).…”

“…are ubiquitous, they are frequently encountered in wet environments, sea water, soil and sewage treatment plants. Over past decade, these Gram negative bacteria are increasingly being implicated in various life threatening infections in health care setting (Elantamilan et al, 2015, Endicott-Yazdani et al, 2015. These infections include skin and soft tissue infections, urinary tract infection, bacteraemia and sepsis (Benedetti et al, 2011, Beharrysingh 2017.…”

“…The patient had multiple admissions, which explains antibiotic resistance of Pseudomonas aeruginosa and Proteus vulgaris isolates. However, isolated Myroides strain was sensitive to carbapenems, fluoroquinolones, minocycline and cefepime, compared to other cases cited in the literature, that generally recorded resistance to β-lactams through chromosomally encoded the subclass B1 of metallo-β-lactamases [16] or variable susceptibility to aminoglycosides or quinolones [8,12,[17][18][19][20]. Common susceptibility of isolated strains to meropenem allowed monotherapy in doses appropriate to renal impairment, recommending at discharge another 7 d of ciprofloxacin.…”
