Seroprevalence of hepatitis A infection in a low endemicity country: a systematic review

Abstract: Background: In Canada -a low endemicity country, vaccines for hepatitis A virus (HAV) are currently recommended to individuals at increased risk for infection or its complications. Applying these recommendations is difficult because the epidemiology of HAV infection is poorly defined, complex, and changing. This systematic review aimed to 1) estimate age-specific prevalence of HAV antibody in Canada and 2) evaluate infection-associated risk factors.

“…Homosexuality, travel to endemic area were found related with the seropositivity. The major risk for low endemic countries is an outbreak of the infection [16,17]. This study shows higher seropositivity than more developed foreign countries, similar to other studies from Turkey.…”

“…The change in seropositivity was associated with the development of Korea accompanied by an improvement in Age group n Anti HAV IgG positivity in Usak n (%) individual and social hygiene [14,15]. Pham et al [16] showed that the seropositivity of HAV in Canada was 1% in 8-13 ages group and increasing up to 17 % in 30-39 years group. These results are lower than those obtained from our country and also from those obained from Cyprus, Singapore and Korea.…”

“…Without vaccination, HAV causes 692 424 cases in Indonesia where the disease acquisition occurs in adulthood rather than childhood as a typical of hepatitis A case in a low endemicity country. 12 Applying a vaccine coverage at 80%, vaccination of 4 200 000 infants would reduce HAV-cases by 452 834 and 322 207 for vaccination with the two-dose and one-dose vaccine schedules, respectively. Also, the cost-effectiveness analyses yielded ICERs from the societal perspective at US$ 7421 and US$ 4933 per QALY gained for both vaccine schedules.…”

“…One confirmed case consumed the product after the recall had been issued, suggesting incomplete penetration of public health messaging. While the number of annual reported cases of hepatitis A is low in BC, seroprevalence of anti-HAV antibodies is also low [28], leading to the ongoing potential for outbreaks.…”
