Serum Amyloid A as a Promising Biomarker in Domestic Animals’ Reproduction: Current Knowledge and Future Perspective

Abstract: The investigation of acute phase proteins in veterinary medicine has opened the doors towards the identification and use of new markers for a timely assessment of health status in both companion and food-producing animals. The aim of this paper is to review the literature available on the use of serum amyloid A (SAA), an acute phase protein, for the diagnosis and monitoring of reproductive disorders in animals. This review critically appraises the usefulness of such marker in clinical practice and summarizes t… Show more

“…APPs are species specific and their diagnostic importance varies according to animal species [13,14]. APPs whose levels change in the case of infection and inflammation are accepted as a nonspecific indicator of the tissue damage [3,15]. In general, APPs, which can directly destroy inflammatory agents, also contribute to the tissue healing and regeneration.…”

“…The production of these proteins is enhanced during infection or the stage of inflammation. It includes CRP, alpha-1 antitrypsin, mannosebinding protein, D-dimer protein, alpha-1 anti-chymotrypsin, alpha 2 macroglobulin, complement factors, prothrombin, factor VIII, fibrinogen, von-Willebrand factor, SAA, SAP complement, plasminogen, ceruloplasmin (Cp), complement factors, and haptoglobin (Hp) (Eckersall and Bell 2010;Bazzano et al 2022).…”

“…The production of these proteins is decreased, so they are called as negative acute phase proteins. Negative APPs include transferring, transthyretin, retinol binding protein, transcortin and albumin (Eckersall and Bell 2010;Bazzano et al 2022).…”

“…Wojtysiak and collaborators provided insights into post-breeding-induced endometritis in the mare, by determining the secretion of anti-inflammatory cytokines and acute-phase proteins in the uterus before and after artificial insemination [ 7 ]. As academic editors, we aimed to deepen the knowledge and use of acute phase proteins in daily practice, offering a review article on serum amyloid A [ 8 ]. This protein has been widely investigated in pets and food-producing animals as a possible indicator of inflammatory and infective conditions, especially in the field of animal reproduction.…”
